91% of Americans own a smartphone. These people are accessing information, in some cases all of their information, from a mobile device. As Robert Knapp, COO of Nic, notes, they are "no longer 'nice to have' or novelty items, mobile devices are well on their way to becoming the primary means of accessing the Internet." This isn't necessarily anything new as we've been hearing the last few years about the necessity of a "mobile first" approach. As Knapp points out in his recent article in Federal Times, many states are already doing this. With tight budgets and limited resources, they are looking for innovative solutions to get more information to their constituents while reducing costs and increasing efficiencies. For many, going mobile is the answer.
